I knew going into this project that I wanted to work with bent plywood or shaped hardwood. I looked for tangentially related furniture to help inform my creative decisions.

Design a step stool that doesn’t shame the owner into hiding it away. Let it live happily within the home.

  1. I built a form two part form to bend around. It had a removable insert so both steps could be made with one form.

  2. The ply was pre-formed when wet, then put into a vacuum bag to be glued and formed.

  3. Holes were drilled into the bottom step to accept screws for the aluminum “pill” slides

  4. A piece of hardwood was inserted and placed into the plywood.

  5. The main slot was routed into the hardwood through the veneer.

Final Prototype

There were some difficulties in fabrication that prevented me from putting the sheet of aluminum on top. The plywood was slightly twisted which didn’t let the aluminum sheet wrap perfectly. Ultimately, I think it was for the better.
